Appreciate Yourself

Did everyone hear about the 91-year-old who ran the Rock ‘N Roll San Diego Marathon last weekend? It’s crazy to think of someone being able to accomplish such a feat at that age. Not only did Harriette Thompson run 26.2 miles, but she has raised thousands of dollars for Team in Training AND just underwent treatment for Cancer. I can only hope that I’m still around at 91, and that I can move enough to simply get myself out the door. She is quite the inspiration!

After learning about Harriette’s record-setting marathon, I have been thinking more and more about the limits of our bodies. We have to appreciate ourselves to be healthy and let our body flourish. This is hard for everyone, I know. As someone who’s recovered from an eating disorder, I’ve learned the hard way how to love myself and appreciate all that my body can do. I’ve learned how to nourish myself and exercise properly so that I’m not causing more damage to my body – and I love myself for it.

I’m appreciative that I can run! Sure, I may not be fast, but my legs support me and are able to keep moving forward. My heart is able to pump blood and my lungs are able to inhale oxygen and exhale CO2. The more I run, the more I love my body for what I can do – regardless of the size of my thighs.

Running, and being active in any way is a sure sign that you are able to appreciate your body and what you can do to keep it healthy. Nourish yourself so you are able to live to 91, and are still able to do what you love at that age – whether it be biking, hiking, crocheting, or traveling.

What would you still be doing at 91?
